Frequently Asked Questions
What Can I Expect from My First Session?
Your first session is all about getting to know you. We’ll talk through what’s been going on in your life, what you’re hoping to work on, and what you’d like to get out of therapy. You’ll be invited to share your current concerns and hopes for therapy, and we will collaborate to set goals. Many people find that just beginning the process provides relief, and the first session often sets the foundation for positive, lasting change.

How Long Will I Be in Therapy?
Therapy doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some people come in with a specific issue they want to address in a few sessions, while others value the ongoing support of longer-term therapy. Factors like your goals, your pace, and the depth of the challenges you’re working through will shape the timeline. What matters most is that therapy works at your speed—not on a preset schedule. At With Intention Counseling, we check in along the way to make sure the process continues to meet your needs.

What to Expect from Therapy
Therapy is a collaborative process. You can expect a safe, nonjudgmental space where you’ll be listened to deeply and supported with evidence-based approaches like CBT, EMDR, somatic techniques, and mindfulness practices. Sessions may include exploring past experiences, practicing new coping skills, or identifying and shifting patterns that keep you stuck. You’ll also experience compassion, honesty, and practical tools you can use outside of the therapy room. Over time, therapy can help you gain clarity, strengthen your relationships, and create lasting change in your daily life.

Yes. Therapy is confidential with very few exceptions required by law, such as concerns about safety. Confidentiality is reviewed in the first session so clients know how their privacy is protected.

I’m Nervous About Starting Therapy
It’s normal to feel anxious about beginning therapy. My role is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can move at your own pace. You don’t need to have the perfect words or know exactly where to start. Just showing up is enough.

What If I’m in Crisis?

Therapy Process

What Types of Therapy Do You Offer?
We offer therapy for individuals, couples, and families including parents and adult children. I also offer parenting support and skills classes. We will work together to tailor each service to meet your goals, to strengthen your relationships, improve communication, and help you feel more connected in your daily life.

What approaches do you use?
With Intention Counseling’s approach blends contemporary understandings of trauma and attachment with evidence-based behavioral strategies to help clients recognize and change unhelpful patterns, strengthen relationships, and create lasting growth. Therapy draws on Forward Facing practices, EMDR, and attachment-focused approaches to support healing, while Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) provide practical tools for coping, communication, and long-term resilience.

What If I’ve Tried Therapy Before and It Didn’t Help?
That’s a common concern. Finding the right therapist is about both style and fit. My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical. Together we’ll focus on what matters most to you, using strategies like grounded self-regulation techniques and attachment can often offer new pathways for healing, even if previous counseling felt unproductive.
Couples and Family Therapy

Do We Have to Be Married to Come to Couples Counseling?
Not at all. With Intention Counseling welcomes all kinds of partner relationships: married, dating, living together, or in non-traditional partnerships. Counseling provides a space to deepen connection, strengthen communication, and build resilience—whether you are working through challenges or simply want to invest in your relationship.
We’ve tried counseling before. How is this different?
Couples and family therapy at With Intention Counseling integrates attachment theory, self-regulation practices, and evidence-based behavioral interventions. The focus is on creating safety and emotional connection while also offering practical tools for communication and problem-solving. This balance of relational depth and actionable strategies helps couples and families experience lasting change, even if previous counseling felt unproductive.

Do you work with families that include adult children?
Yes. With Intention Counseling supports families through the unique transitions of adulthood, such as redefining boundaries, navigating caregiving roles, or addressing unresolved patterns from the past. Family therapy is often most effective when used proactively, before conflicts become overwhelming. Sessions provide space for open communication, mutual respect, and healing so relationships across generations can grow stronger, healthier, and more resilient.
Things aren’t that bad. Should we still consider couples therapy?
Yes. Couples counseling is not only for relationships in crisis. In fact, when things aren’t that bad, it is often the best time to invest in your relationship. Many couples choose therapy to strengthen their bond, improve communication, and build skills for navigating challenges in the future. With Intention Counseling provides a supportive space to deepen connection and maintain the health of your relationship.
Parenting and Teen Therapy

Do You See Teens on Their Own, or Only with Parents?
Both. Depending on age and goals, I may meet with your teen individually, with you together, or alternate between family and individual sessions. We’ll decide what feels most supportive for your family.

How Can Therapy Help My Teen?
Teens benefit from having a safe space outside of school and family to talk about stress, relationships, or identity. Therapy can help them build coping skills, regulate emotions, and navigate independence with more confidence.

Will I Know What My Teen Says in Therapy?
Legally, parents and guardians can request access to their teen’s therapy records. At With Intention Counseling, we encourage parents to allow their teen the same confidentiality they would expect in their own counseling. This privacy helps teens feel safe to open up and build trust in the process. Parents receive updates about general progress, and any concerns about safety or potential harm to self or others are always communicated directly.

Can Therapy Help with Parenting Challenges?
Yes. Parenting skills sessions offer practical, evidence-based tools to help you parent with more confidence and calm whether you’re navigating toddler tantrums, adolescent pushback, or shifting boundaries with adult children.
